About this format

The MPEG standard container from 2001. Usually H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio inside, and virtually every device, browser and platform opens it. When in doubt, mp4.

What it can hold

  • Video (H.264, H.265, AV1 and others)
  • Audio (AAC and others)
  • Subtitle tracks
  • Chapters and metadata

What it cannot

  • Old codecs — an unusual codec inside means it will not open even though it is mp4

When you convert it

MP4 → GIFSound goes, colour drops to 256, and the file grows. Only for a few seconds' worth.
MP4 → MP3Video goes; only sound remains. A common request for meeting and lecture recordings.
MP4 → WEBMFor the web. Slightly smaller; older devices cannot open it.
MP4 → MKVNothing lost; only the container changes. Good for carrying several subtitles.

When it will not open

  • H.265 inside, on an old device — the mp4 is fine, the codec is missing
  • Truncated download — without the index (moov) at the end it cannot open
  • Variable frame rate confuses some editors

In one line An mp4 that will not open is usually a codec problem. Convert it to mp4 again (H.264) and it opens.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a MP4 file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
