.hwp · application/x-hwp

Hancom's document format, in continuous use since 1989 and the standard for Korean government, schools and courts — unavoidable if you work with Korean institutions. The post-2010 specification is public.

Paragraphs, tables, images, headers
Hangul-specific typesetting (overlapping characters, vertical text)
Equations and charts

Full compatibility with Word — each opens the other only approximately

HWP → PDF	Appearance is preserved exactly. Government submissions usually go this way.
HWP → DOCX	Tables and images survive; Hangul-only formatting may shift. Look it over afterwards.
HWP → TXT	Only words remain.

No Hancom Office on this machine — the free viewer opens it
A pre-5.0 legacy file
Confused with .hwpx, which is a different extension

Going to a Korean government office? Keep it hwp. Going anywhere else? pdf is safer.
