About this format

Created by Phil Katz in 1989. The only archive format Windows, Mac and Linux all open natively, which makes it the right answer for sending to anyone. Not the best compression ratio.

What it can hold

  • Multiple files and folders
  • Passwords (weak and AES)
  • Per-file compression

What it cannot

  • The best ratio — 7z is smaller
  • Files over 4 GB (needs zip64)

When you convert it

ZIP → 7ZSmaller. The recipient needs 7-Zip installed.
ZIP → TARCompression removed; only the bundle remains. For Linux.

When it will not open

  • Non-Latin filenames garbled — a zip made on Windows in a legacy encoding, opened elsewhere
  • Refused as a suspected zip bomb
  • Truncated download

In one line Sending to someone? zip. Keeping for yourself? 7z is smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a ZIP file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
