About this format

Made by Aldus in 1986 for scanners; now Adobe's. Lossless and multi-page, it is the standard for scanning, print, medical imaging and archives. Files are large.

What it can hold

  • Lossless (or optional compression)
  • Multiple pages
  • CMYK and 16-bit colour
  • Layers (in some)
  • Capture and scan metadata

What it cannot

  • The web — browsers cannot display it
  • Small file sizes

When you convert it

TIFF → JPGA little quality lost, much smaller. Multi-page becomes the first page only.
TIFF → PDFPages become pages. The usual route for keeping scanned tiffs.
TIFF → PNGLossless, kept. Multi-page becomes the first page only.

When it will not open

  • Unusual compression — JPEG-in-tiff or an old LZW variant
  • Multi-page but only the first shows — the program does not know multi-page tiff

In one line For long-term storage of scans, tiff or pdf/a. For sending, convert to pdf.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a TIFF file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
