About this format

A bundling format from 1979, made for Unix tape archives. It bundles without compressing, so compression is applied on top — tar.gz, tar.xz. The standard for Linux, Mac and software distribution.

What it can hold

  • Files and folders
  • Unix permissions, owners and links

What it cannot

  • Compression — must be applied separately
  • Native Windows support (Windows 11 has it)

When you convert it

TAR → ZIPUnix permissions are lost. For sending to Windows users.
TAR → 7ZPermissions lost; smaller.

When it will not open

  • Windows 10 and earlier natively — use 7-Zip
  • A tar.gz with a .tgz extension — the same thing

In one line Between Linux and Mac, tar.gz. To Windows, zip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a TAR file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
