About this format

The W3C's vector image standard, from 1999, written in XML. Lines and shapes are stored as mathematics, so it scales to any size without breaking. Used for logos, icons and diagrams.

What it can hold

  • Lines, shapes and text (as geometry)
  • Colour, gradients, transparency
  • Simple animation
  • Embedded bitmap images

What it cannot

  • Photographs — a photo is not a vector

When you convert it

SVG → PNGBecomes a pixel image at the size you choose, and breaks if enlarged afterwards. Pick a generous size.
SVG → PDFVectors survive intact — good for print.
SVG → ICOScaled down into several sizes.

When it will not open

  • Text looks different — the font is not in the file. Convert text to outlines before saving and it looks the same everywhere
  • Very complex svg that an old program cannot render

In one line Keep your logo as svg. You can export it at any size, forever. A png is only ever that one size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a SVG file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
