About this format

A 3D format from Wavefront in the 1980s. Plain text, so it can be read, with materials (.mtl) and textures kept as separate files that must travel with it. Most 3D software opens it.

What it can hold

  • Faces, vertices, normals, UVs
  • Material references (.mtl file)
  • Groups

What it cannot

  • Animation
  • A single file — materials and textures are separate

When you convert it

OBJ → STLColour, material and UVs are lost. For printing.
OBJ → GLBMaterials and textures packed into one file. For the web.
OBJ → FBXRoom for animation appears.

When it will not open

  • No materials showing — the .mtl or texture files did not come along

In one line Send obj as a zip of .obj, .mtl and textures. Miss one and the model comes out white.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a OBJ file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
