About this format

Made for photographs by the JPEG committee in 1992. Its lossy compression discards what the eye cannot see, which is good for photos and bad for text or line art. Most photos on the internet are jpg.

What it can hold

  • Photographs (16 million colours)
  • Shooting data (EXIF) — camera, time, location

What it cannot

  • Transparency
  • Layers
  • Animation
  • Losslessness — quality drops a little on every save

When you convert it

JPG → PNGQuality stays as it is but the file grows 5–10×. Quality already lost does not come back.
JPG → WEBPSame quality, 25–35% smaller. For the web, go this way.
JPG → PDFThe photo placed on one page.
JPG → HEICHalf the size, but older devices cannot open it.

When it will not open

  • Actually HEIC with a .jpg extension — sent from an iPhone
  • CMYK jpg — meant for print; some programs show the colours wrong
  • Truncated — the top shows, the bottom is grey

In one line Every open-and-save of a jpg costs a little quality. Save intermediate work as png, and export jpg only at the end.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a JPG file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
