About this format

Apple made it the iPhone's default photo format with iOS 11 in 2017. Half the size of jpg at the same quality, and it carries HDR, depth and Live Photos. The trouble is that little outside Apple opens it.

What it can hold

What it cannot

  • Broad compatibility — Windows 10 needs a paid extension, and most web browsers cannot display it

When you convert it

HEIC → JPGHDR, depth and the Live Photo go, and colour drops to 8-bit. Usually no visible difference. Twice the size.
HEIC → PNGLossless, but 5× larger or more. HDR is lost.
HEIC → WEBPSize stays similar and it shows on the web. HDR is lost.

When it will not open

  • Won't open on Windows — install the HEIF Image Extensions or convert to jpg
  • Arrived by email and won't open — on the sender's iPhone, set Camera → Formats → Most Compatible and it sends jpg
  • Android before 9
