About this format

Created by CompuServe in 1987. Only 256 colours, so wrong for photos, but still the most universally supported way to carry a moving image.

What it can hold

  • Animation
  • Transparency (1-bit — no partial transparency)
  • 256 colours

What it cannot

  • 16 million colours — photos look grainy
  • Sound

When you convert it

GIF → MP4The same animation at a tenth of the size with full colour. Autoplay and looping are then up to the viewer.
GIF → PNGOnly the first frame survives.
GIF → WEBPAnimation kept, colours improved, file smaller. Only old software cannot open it.

When it will not open

  • It does not move — the program shows only the first frame. Open it in a browser

In one line If a moving image is too big to send, use mp4. If it must autoplay in a chat app, keep gif.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a GIF file?

Drop the file into the window, pick the target format, and download the result. No account required.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser. A Windows installer is available separately if you prefer one.

What if the format I want isn't listed?

Every engine's capabilities are merged into a single graph, so unlisted pairs are chained automatically through intermediate formats along the least-lossy route.
