About this format

Word's format since Word 2007. Internally it is several XML files inside a zip — rename it .zip and it opens. Standardised as ISO 29500 in 2008.

What it can hold

  • Paragraphs, tables, images, headers, footnotes
  • Styles and a table of contents
  • Tracked changes and comments
  • Embedded fonts (optional)

What it cannot

  • A fixed page appearance — line breaks shift with the program and fonts that open it
