About this format

Values separated by commas, in plain text. In use since 1972, with almost no formal standard, so every program writes it slightly differently — which is why it sometimes opens perfectly and sometimes oddly.

  • Formulas, formatting, sheets, data types — none of them. Whether a cell is a number or text is guessed by whatever opens it

When you convert it

CSV → XLSXNothing to lose — except leading zeros (phone numbers, say) may be read as numbers and vanish.
CSV → JSONEach row becomes an object; the header row becomes the keys.

When it will not open

  • Non-Latin text garbled in Excel — it is UTF-8 without a BOM. Save as UTF-8 with BOM
  • Semicolons instead of commas — European-style csv
  • Everything lands in one column — the delimiter was misdetected

In one line Garbled text in Excel is not the file's fault. Re-save as 'UTF-8 with BOM' and it is fixed.
